Question:
Dear CQD, I walked a job the other day, and I noticed that someone had installed 3” EMT/ IMC compression couplings on a 5kV rigid conduit run. I’m not incredibly fluent with the install of rigid, is this acceptable? Thanks in advance, Tyler Easton
A
Answer:
Hi Tyler, thank you for your question. Section 344.42(A) does permit the use of “threadless” couplings and connectors for Rigid Metal conduit. The threadless fitting must made up tight and identified for use with Rigid Metal conduit. The manufacturer of that fitting will be able to provide information on the whether it can be used for Rigid Metal Conduit in addition to EMT and IMC. It is also important to note that a threadless fitting cannot be installed over the threaded ends unless the fitting is specifically listed for that installation.
