Question:

Good Morning,

Thank you for keeping this going in spite of some thinking that some questions are too elementary. No question is too elementary where lives are concerned.

My question in regards to flexible cords in question you cited 400.7 and 400.8. When looking it up as I always do on questions I found that in the 2017 code book they have deleted them and moved /re-numbered them as 400.10 and 400.12 resulting in re-numbering the following sections. What was the reasoning behind this (if you know), as I don’t see much rewording or additions to these sections. Some changes just seem to mystify me so I need to ask why. Thank you for your time.

Answer:

Hey Millard thanks for your question and your comment. We would like to please all of our readers all the time but it seems there are many different interests and opinions. It is surprising how many comments, with additional information related to those questions, are sometimes received. Readers are encouraged to read the sections referenced to help understand the entire rule using the latest NEC edition as you did.

The .10 and .12 sections became "placeholders" for Uses Permitted and Uses Not Permitted during the revision of the wiring methods articles in Chapter 3 for the 2002 edition. That makes it easier to locate the rules when comparing the various wiring methods - increasing usability by a consistent arrangement. Although flexible cords are not a wiring method, using the same section numbers makes sense.
