Question:
Can a rated cord and plug be used as a means of disconnect for a machine? Does NFPA 70E. 130.6.L apply in this case?
Steven Costa
A
Answer:
Hey Steven thanks for your question. Attachment plugs and receptacles can be used as a disconnecting means under certain conditions. An example is 430.109(F) for cord and plug connected motors. The use of flexible cord must also comply with 400.7 and 400.8. More listing information about HP ratings for attachment plugs can be found at:
http://productspec.ul.com/document.php?id=AXUT.GuideInfo
NFPA 79 -2015 has additional rules for attachment plugs and receptacles used as disconnecting means for industrial machinery in 5.3.3.2 and 5.3.3.3. If rated greater than 20 ampere or 2 HP they must be listed as a switch-rated plug and receptacle.
NFPA 70E 130.6(L) does require that load rated devices be used for routine opening and closing of circuits.
