Question:
Need to install a remote (not remote controlled) breaker from my 800 amp panel to a 200 amp sub panel. I believe the remote breaker needs to be 6 feet away from the 800 amp panel per code. Is it a minimum of 6 feet away, or 6 feet of total wire length away from the 800 amp panel?

A
Answer:
Hey Michael thanks for your question. There are various rules in the NEC that use 6 ft as a dimension but none seem applicable to the situation you are describing. If the conductors supplying the 200 amp panelboard have overcurrent protection as stated in 240.4 there is no dimension provided. If you are using one of the "tap rules" in 240.21 to locate the overcurrent protective device other that at the point where the conductor receives its supply, then the dimensions in the specific rule (such as 10 ft, 25 ft, etc) apply.
