Question:
Dear CQD, I know that a Fire Pump can be supplied by a dedicated service. Is there any circumstances where the
Code would allow for a Fire Pump to be supplied by a feeder supplied from the buildings electrical service? Regards, Allen Weinholz
A
Answer:
Hi Allen, in general this would not be permitted, and the fire pump would need to be supplied by a tap ahead of the service disconnect, or the fire pump would require its own independent service. However, Section 695.3(C) has 2 power supply methods for fire pumps in Multibuilding Campus Style Complexes, both of which permit the use of feeders. This installation method is permitted if the methods listed in 695.3(A) are not practical, the AHJ approves of the installation, and all over current protective devices are selectively coordinated with the supply-side overcurrent protective devices.
Section 695.3(C)(1) allows for the fire pump to be supplied by two or more feeders, if said feeders are connected to, or derived from two separate utility services.
Section 695.3(C)(2) allows for a fire pump to be supplied by a feeder, and an alternate source of power, like an on-site standby generator.
