Question:
I have a small 3hp pump (laboratory application). It has a 3 phase motor. The distance between the starter and the pump is about 3 feet - is it alright to use 14/4 SO cable in a liquid tight flexible conduit or does it need to be stripped?

A
Answer:
Hey Kurt thanks for your question. If the "small" pump is portable or needs to be frequently interchanged and complies with 400. 7 and 40.8 then the use of flexible cord might be justified, if not, don't use flexible cord. The conductors in flexible cord don't have markings on them, they are intended to be used as part of that cord, not by having the outer cord covering removed and being installed in a raceway. If the pump is a permanent application then use an appropriate wiring method in NEC Chapter 3.
