Question:
I have a question about individual motor fusing. On a large freezer evaporator with 1HP or 1.5HP motors at 460v 3PH with individual thermal protection, do I need individual motor fusing. The factory says that the NEC does not apply and that they meet the EISA codes.
Jerome Dehler
A
Answer:
Hey Jerome thanks for your question. Assuming the equipment is part of an installation that is covered by the NEC as described in 90.2(A) then yes the motors need to be protected from short circuits or ground faults. The branch circuit overcurent protection device (typically circuit breaker or fuse) could be used for that purpose under certain conditions. If by "the factory" you mean the freezer manufacturer then they are not the AHJ. The Energy Independence & Security Act (EISA) is primarily focused on energy conservation not NEC or product standard compliance. If the evaporator motors are hermetic refrigerant motor compressors then 440.4 and 440.22 apply.
