Question:
A house built in 1980 has an electrical panel located in the basement bathroom. It is 6' away from shower, 4' away from sink and 2.5' away from toilet. Home inspector says we need to move it, but he can't site me a code for this. Buyers walked because of this. Does it have to be moved or is it grandfathered in?
Philip Miller
A
Answer:
Hey Philip thanks for your question. Service equipment and overcurrent devices were not prohibited from being installed in bathrooms of dwelling units until the 1996 NEE in 230-70(A) and the 1993 NEC 240-24(e)
The term "grandfathering" doesn't exist in the NEC but the NEC is also not typically applied retroactively. A local ordinance or other rule could require something different.
