Question:

Hello CQD, I have a question regarding arc fault protection. I am adding an exhaust fan in a bathroom. I intend to supply power to the bathroom exhaust fan, by extending the existing bedroom circuit to the bathroom fan. Bathrooms are not an area where AFCI protection is required per Code, but Bedrooms are. Does the circuit supplying the bathroom fan required AFCI protection?

We always go above and beyond anyhow, and will be adding the arc fault breaker, yet I'm just curious if it is required in this situation. Thank you! Adam C.

A

Answer:

Hello Adam, great question!

Section 210.12(D) covers Branch Circuit Extensions or Modifications. Extending the Bedroom branch circuit to supply power to an exhaust fan installed in a bathroom, is still extending, or modifying the branch circuit for the bedroom. Bedrooms are one of the areas covered in Section 210.12(A) so AFCI protection for the branch circuit would be required (if it is not already protected) using one of the methods listed in (1) and (2) of Section 210.12(D). The Exception to Section 210.12(D) would not apply as you are adding a fan outlet
