Question:

Re: CQD answer published Friday, February 20, 2015 - Gas Line Separation 1

Charlie,

The NEC might not require a separation but the NESC does.  The NESC requires that “Radial separation of supply and communications cables or conductors from steam lines, gas, and other lines that transport flammable material shall be not less than 300 mm (12 inches) …” There is an exception to this but only if the supply conductors are less than 300 V between conductors “provided supplemental mechanical protection is used to limit the likelihood of detrimental heat transfer …” and also that there is “agreement to the reduced separation by all utilities involved …” I know that the NESC is NOT the NEC and probably would not apply in this case but it is worth noting.
