Question:
Every morning is wonderful when you wake up with Code Question of the Day.
I have a commercial garage that is Class 1 Div. 2- up to 18” off the floor. There is a cord reel mounted on the ceiling and is long enough to drop the plugs on the cord reel into that area. Does this violate article 501 or 511 in any way? I see in article 511.4(B)(2) there is a rule for portable lighting equipment to not reach that area, but there doesn’t seem to be a rule for a cord reel with plugs.

A
Answer:
Hey Chad we are glad that CQD helps you wake up in the mornings. It doesn't violate the rule in 511.4 until someone extends the cord connector into the classified location! You are correct there is a rule for portable lighting equipment in 511.4(B)(2) but a cord connector does not have a similar specific rule other than for battery or vehicle charging as stated in 511.10. Notice that pendants are specifically permitted above the Class 1 location as stated in 511.7(A)(2). This might be an opportunity and I suggest you submit a public input for the 2020 NEC.
