Question:
The Code requires Schedule 80 rigid nonmetallic conduit (RNC) to protect utility company cables from physical damage when they arise from the trench to the meter socket. In the trench, we are required by the utility contractor to install a 90 degree RNC elbow and up to 5 ft of conduit. In the trench, is the elbow and 5 ft of pipe required to be Schedule 80? Or is it permitted to be Schedule 40?

A
Answer:
Hello Billy,
The NEC doesn't cover service laterals under the exclusive control of an electric utility; see 90.2(B)(5)(a). This information must be obtained from the utility. If the underground wiring is underground service conductors by definition, they are not under the exclusive control of the utility, then the requirements in the NEC could be applied, as you mentioned in the question. The AHJ and utility company could also provide specific requirements for your area.
