Question:
I look forward to code question of the day every morning and look forward to the daily insight.
I have a friend who is having his home completely rewired top to bottom. It is a six bedroom home and has three stories. According to the NEC it would require 120 V battery back up smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. My friend, however, does not want to pay for them because he already has a security system which has integrated smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as part of the system.
My question is this: Can a home security systems smoke detector system preclude the need to have 120 V battery back up hardwired smoke detectors?
Thank you. Be well. Michael J.

Answer:
Hey Michael thanks for your question, we are glad you enjoy the CQD. Yes, if it meets certain conditions. It is a common misunderstanding that the NEC requires smoke detectors and fire alarm systems - but it doesn't. Article 760 covers fire alarm system installations, such as the wiring for them, but does not actually require that they be installed. The requirement for having these types of systems is in building and life safety codes.
NFPA 72-2016, National Fire alarm and Signaling Code does contain provisions and requirements for combination systems, such as fire/burglar systems, in 29.7.7.
Check with your local Building Official and Fire Marshal to make sure they agree your friend's system is acceptable and compliant with the local codes or requirements.
