Question:
Hello and thanks for this NEC Question Forum.
Where an above-ground run of intermediate metal conduit (IMC) passes from a Class I, Division 2 location into an unclassified location, on which side of the boundary does the conduit seal need to be located? How far from the boundary does the seal need to be?
Thanks for your opinion.

Answer:
Hi Paul and thanks for the question. Where intermediate metal conduit (IMC) passes from a Class I, Division 2 location into an unclassified location, a seal needs to be provided within 10 feet of the boundary. The seal can be located on either side of the boundary and there can be no fitting other than listed reducers between the boundary and the sealing fitting. The seal has to be accessible but does not have to be explosion-proof but must be identified for minimizing the passage of gas or vapors under normal operating conditions. See Section 501.15(B)(2).
