Question:

Start each day with you guy’s…Thanks, it exercise’s the old brain.

The new requirements in 700.5, 701.5 & 702.5 for Field labeling the Transfer Equipment with the short circuit current rating of the ATS. This I assume is done by checking either the Coordination study and or the SCCR of the Normal & Emergency breakers suppling the ATS. My Question is I see no requirement for this in 517…  It seems to me this would be important for Transfer Equipment on the Essential Electrical System to be field labeled with this info also?

Thanks,

Kelly Wofford

Answer:

Hey Kelly thanks for your question and the compliment. The term Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR)is defined in Article 100 and is the amount of current something (such as equipment) can deal with during a fault condition such as a short circuit. Many types or equipment are marked with their SCCR by the manufacturer. A transfer switch can have different marked values depending on the overcurrent protective device type and settings. The new rules in 700.5(E), 701.5(D), 702.5 and 708.24(E) require the transfer equipment to be field marked on the exterior with its SCCR based on the specific overcurrent protective device type and setting. Only the life safety branch is required to comply with Article 700 as stated in 517.26 but because the rules are in Articles 700, 701, 702 and 708 they apply to transfer equipment used in those applications in all occupancies.
