Question:
When doing a rewire in a dwelling of an existing AC or heating unit if there is no outlet within 25’ are you required to provide one
David Pedroli
A
Answer:
Hey David thanks for your question. Section 210.63 requires a 15 or 20 ampere 125 volt receptacle outlet be installed within 25 feet of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. That section does not have specific wording about what and when the receptacle outlet or the described equipment get installed.
For a new installation it is simple, if that type of utilization equipment is installed the receptacle outlet must also be installed. If you are only rewiring that type of existing utilization equipment then most AHJ's probably would not require a receptacle be installed. If you are rewiring that part of the dwelling then the AHJ might require a receptacle outlet be installed, the final decision is up to the AHJ. Maybe some AHJ's will send in comments with their thoughts. Even if not specifically required, providing a receptacle outlet will likely be useful in the future when servicing the equipment.
