Question:
Hey Charlie,
I’ve seen on those home improvement shows where new electrical panels are mounted horizontally. How is that compliant with 240.81 where the circuit breakers need to be in the “up” position when in the “on” position? Wouldn’t one row of the vertically operated breakers be in violation?
Thank you, Jake Inouye
A
Answer:
Hey Jake thanks for your question. Yes, if circuit breakers are operated vertically the up position must be the on position as stated in 240. If both rows were used then one row would not comply and the instructions included with the panelboard could also prohibit that orientation. Home improvement demonstrations and shows can offer some good tips but the installation needs to be made by a qualified person.
