Question:
A future conduit is run from the main electrical panel/loadcenter, located in the garage, to the mechanical room in the basement. Is it required to terminate this conduit to a junction box or cap it? Can it remain open ended in the basement until conductors are installed? Thanks in advance.

A
Answer:
Hey Justin thanks for your question. Installing a raceway for future use is a good idea. In general raceways must be installed complete between enclosures as stated in 300.18(A) and be mechanically continuous as stated in 300.12. Openings in enclosures must be closed as stated 110.12(A) and it might be a stretch but the interior of the raceway could be considered a hole in the garage panelboard. Capping the end of the raceway is easy to do and will help keep out insects and other pests.
