Question:
Hello Code Question of the Day.
I'm trying to find the ampacity of a motor to size branch circuit conductors. Do I use the nameplate on the motor or the Article 430 Tables?
Don Wilson
A
Answer:
Hi Don,
Good to hear from you and thanks for the question. The value of motor current shown on the motor nameplate should be used generally for sizing overload protection. The Article 430 Tables should generally be used to determine the full load current of a motor. See Section 430.6 and Annex D Example D8 for additional guidance in applying the article 430 requirements.
