Question:
Does a 50 amp outside outlet for an RV have to be on a GFI circuit?
Thanks Joe O. from Florida
A
Answer:
Hey Joe from Florida thanks for your question. You don't say where the receptacle is located but if at a dwelling unit then no because 210.8(A) only applies to 15 and 20 ampere receptacles. If it is located at other than a dwelling unit then yes GFCI protection is required. Section 210.8(B) now requires GFCI protection for single phase receptacles up to 50 amperes and three phase receptacles up to 100 amperes that are supplied from systems operating at not more than 150 volts to ground.
In recreational vehicle parks all 125 volt single phase 15 and 20 ampere receptacles need GFCI protection as stated in 551.71(F). There is no wording that removes the rule in 210.8(B).
