Dear Charlie:
One of the code sections cited in your response to Friday’s question was NEC 695.3 (1). This section includes the language with which I would hesitate to allow an unprotected conductor to run across the roof. Refer:
(1) Electric Utility Service Connection. A fire pump shall be permitted to be supplied by a separate service, or from a connection located ahead of and not within the same cabinet, enclosure, or vertical switchboard section as the service disconnecting means. The connection shall be located and arranged so as to minimize the possibility of damage by fire from within the premises and from exposing hazards. A tap ahead of the service disconnecting means shall comply with 230.82(5). The service equipment shall comply with the labeling requirements in 230.2 and the location requirements in 230.72(B). [20:9.2.2(1)]

Answer:
Hey Lyth thanks for your comment. The wording in 695.3 (1) that you copied states the "connection" be located and arranged to minimize the possibility of damage... The rule for service supply conductor wiring is in 695.6(A) and it initially states the wiring must be outside the building. Section 695.3 requires a reliable source of power but a definition of that is not provided in the NEC. NFPA 20 is the Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection as stated in the Informational Note to 695.1 so the AHJ that enforces that such as the Fire Marshall or Building Official should also be consulted before making the installation.
