Question:

Re: CQD answer published Friday, August 19, 2016 -Drip Pans in Dedicated Spase

Some additional thought on Paul Cline's Question on utilizing 'drip pans' for plumbing routed over electrical equipment and your answer per 110.26(E)(1). The NEC Handbook has some excellent commentary and illustrations regarding an installation that has foreign systems located above the dedicated equipment space required by Art.110.26(E).

Often it is left to the AHJ to come up with a solution to a violation in this space due to poor planning or a dis-regard of its importance to the integrity and future access of the electrical system. There is a common belief that by placing a 'leak protection apparatus' (duct, trough, gutter etc.) around the violating foreign system the problem has been cured without maintaining the required 6(six) foot spacing above the equipment per 110.26(E)(1)(a).

Answer:

Hey Michael thanks for your comment. You are correct, as we stated the drip pan and any foreign piping must be above the dedicated space as stated in 110.26(E)(1)(b).
