Question:
Hello CQD, can you "load-side" GFI protect a non-grounded circuit and then change the receptacles to grounded-type devices?
Thanks in advance,
Richard Nash
A
Answer:
Richard, thanks for your submission, this is a great question. Section 406.4(D)(c) of the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) provides guidance on the type of installation you describe in your question. A non-grounding-type receptacle can be replaced with grounding-type receptacles provided that the newly installed grounding-type receptacles are:
1 - supplied/protected through a GFCI device.
2 - marked "GFCI Protected" and "No Equipment Ground"
3 - There cannot be an equipment grounding conductor installed between the newly installed
grounding-type receptacles
