Question:
Dear Charlie, on old construction, am I responsible for other code violations beyond installation of equipment I install? I have to get an inspection, as of now I turn down a lot of work, because of other code problems I see past my installation. This situation often creates confusion, I am just getting started as an electrical contractor, license number L 34280.
Thanks,
Larry Pointdexter

Answer:
Larry, thank you for your question, as the situation you are describing is not an uncommon one. Inform the property owner of the unsafe existing wiring, and your intentions to obtain a permit and inspection for the work you will be performing. That discussion may be enough for the property owner to have the unsafe wiring corrected. Additionally, it is always advisable to check with your local AHJ, as many jurisdictions have a local rule/ordinance in place for addressing existing code violations. Good luck in your new business endeavor!
