Question:
Why should a plastic gang box be mounted flush against the outside of 1/2" sheetrock and is it a requirement by code to done so?

Hey Larry thanks for your question. Boxes are intended to contain electric wiring and equipment. If the wall surface is non-combustible such as sheetrock a flush box is allowed to be recessed up to 1/4 inch. In this case the non-combustible material is used to help contain the effects of a fault and provide a practical application as stated in 314.20.
