Question:
Hello Charlie,
I was asked about what the NEC has requirements for adding on meter socket assemblies that allow the generators with a floating neutral to plug in. On this specific accessory, it requires the neutral/ground lead which is installed by the utility supplier.
Thanks for any information,
Ann Martin

Answer:
Ann, I believe you are referring to the portable generator transfer device that plugs into the meter opening of a meter socket. Well the 2014 NEC does not address these devices specifically, this would still be considered an Article 702, Optional Standby System transfer switch, connecting to a portable generator. You can find guidance in Section 702.11 for grounding requirements for optional standby portable generators and Sections 702.4 & 702.5 for transfer switches for optional standby systems. Additionally, checking with the utility for this type of device installation is strongly recommended, as they will likely have restrictions or guidance on the use of this type of device.
