Question:
My question is where in the code book would I find that Romex is not allowed to be used in a two family house with a basement and three floors above? I do remember seeing that a few years ago but I cannot seem to find it now.
As always .Thank You Lisa Tarallo

Answer:
Hey Lisa thanks for your question. It was quite a few years ago, depending on what you think a few years is. The 1996 NEC limited Nonmetallic Sheathed Cable (NM) to buildings not exceeding three floors above grade in 336-6.In the 1999 NEC the rule was changed to limit NM cable in multifamily dwellings or other structures to tree floors above grade in 336-5. In the 2002 NEC the language was changed to use the concept of building types instead of number of floor limits in 334.10 and Annex E was added to describe building construction types which relate to the permitted number of floors. Presently the types of construction (non combustible, fire restive, rated, etc) determines the type use of NM.
