You are installing a 200 ampere fused disconnect for an electric furnace. You have installed it on the wall beside the furnace with 40in. of clearance in front of the switch to the side of the furnace. The switch is a 480V, 3 phase, 4w, and the furnace is grounded. Was the inspector correct in turning the installation down for inadequate clearance?

Absolutely! Section 110-16(a) points to table 110-16(a) which for that condition (2) and voltage requires 42in. since it is a fused disconnect and the fuses would require service if the fuses let go.
By the way, all of the tables in the National Electrical Code are referenced in the text. Even when we just refer to the tables, they mean nothing if the text does not recognize them. The tables in the appendices are for reference and can not be enforced.
