Question:
I want to install an 8 inch square duct under my surface mounted
panelboard that is 4 inches deep. Do I have to fur out the panelboard to
meet 110-16? This does not seem reasonable since there is a square duct for
circuits coming out of the panelboard.
A
Answer:
Yes, you do have to follow 110-16(a), part of which follows:
"(a) Working Clearances. Except as elsewhere required or permitted in this
Code, the dimension of the working space in the direction of access to live
parts operating at 600 volts, nominal, or less to ground and likely to
require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized
shall not be less than indicated in Table 110-16(a). ..... The work space
shall be clear and extend from the floor or platform to the height required
by this section. ..... Equipment of equal depth shall be permitted within
the height requirements of this section."
Look at section 110-26(a)(3) of the 1999 Code, which states in part ".....
Located above or below the electrical equipment shall be permitted to
extend not more than 6 inches beyond the front of the electrical
equipment." This verbiage will permit your installation after the new Code
takes effect in your area.
