Question:
Hello,
I have a project where the electrician has installed a wireway through a 12-inch wall. As I understand the NEC, wireways are required to be installed for exposed work only. Is there an exception that allows the portion passing through the section of wall or does this installation have to be reinstalled so that the entire wireway is exposed? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
Hi Jeremy,
The NEC does address the installation you describe for both metallic wireways and nonmetallic types. The Code recognizes that wireways extending through a wall is acceptable if the section of wireway is unbroken and the conductors in the wireway are accessible on both sides of the wall. See Sections 376.10(4) and 378.10(4).
