Question:
Hi, my question is about cords. Can a cord be run above a suspended ceiling to supply a vending machine on the other side of the hallway? This doesn't seem to be the correct way to power this equipment. I look forward to your reply.

Answer:
Greetings Eddie, thanks for the question. We do get several inquiries on use of cords. Based on the information in the question, your hunch is correct. The NEC does prohibit cords from being installed above a ceiling as indicated in the question. See Section 400.12(5) provides the text that restricts this use. Another item to note here is that vending machines must be provided with ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection (GFCI) for personnel as required in Section 422(A)(5)(5). Hope this is helpful.
