Question:
Good Morning,
I've been told that the NEC requires maintenance of large scale energy storage systems. I understood the NEC to be an installation Code and didn’t address maintenance? What am I missing?

Answer:
Hi Peter,
Thanks for the question. To answer your specific question, yes, energy storage systems are required to be maintained in accordance with manufacturer's requirements and industry standards. This maintenance is also required to be documented. See NEC Section 706.7. The NEC does contain both installation and maintenance requirements. You are correct in that it mostly covers electrical installations. However, there are maintenance requirements included in multiple articles of the NEC. A few sections are 700.3, 701.3, 708.6, 706.7, and so forth. The word maintenance appears in the NEC at least 273 times. NFPA 70B provides more specific information about electrical equipment maintenance.
