Question:
Hello Code Friends! Do the requirements for AFCI protection apply to the occupant’s unit of an assisted living facility? Best, Tim Reynolds
A
Answer:
Tim, great question! The assisted living facility units would require AFCI protection, if those units of the assisted living facility also contained the appropriate amenities to also qualify as one of the living or sleeping spaces listed in Section 210.12(A)-(C)
- (A) Dwelling Unit
- (B) Dormitory Units
- (C) Guest Room, Guest Suite, or Patient Sleeping Rooms in Nursing Homes or Limited Care Facilities.
For example, the Article 100 definition of a “Dwelling Unit” is:
A single unit, providing complete and independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation.
If the assisted living facility unit(s) have a kitchen with an oven/stove, a bathroom, and a bedroom, then it would meet the definition of a dwelling unit and therefore the AFCI requirements listed in Section 210.12(A)(1)-(6).
