Question:
Greetings,
Good morning, I have a question regarding two codes listed in the NEC 334.10 & 334.12 concerning damp areas. Neither of the two codes listed here specifically mention crawl spaces as damp areas. So my question is if we have a properly ventilated crawl space, is it considered a damp space that would prohibit the installation of nonmetallic sheathed cable (NM) wiring along the side of the joists?
Thank you in advance for your time.

Answer:
Hi Aeron,
Thanks for the question. Crawl spaces under buildings are typically considered damp locations because they meet the criteria in the definition of the term damp location" in Article 100 of the NEC. Wiring methods and equipment installed in damp locations are required to be suitable for damp locations. Nonmetallic cable (Type NMC) is suitable for damp locations, as indicated in Section 334.10(B).
