Question:
Hello Code Question of the Day,
I need help with a question related to electric motors. Do I size the motor overcurrent protection based on the motor nameplate, or do I use the tables in Article 430? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Chad Smith

Answer:
Hello Chad,
Thanks for the question. We will keep this as simple as possible. The branch circuit, short-circuit, and the ground-fault protective device is generally sized according to the table ampacity values for motors in Article 430. The overload protection for motors is sized, generally using the current values on the motor nameplate. See NEC Section 430.6 and Example D8 for additional information.
