Question:
Greetings,
I am a first time home buyer. The home inspection report stated the homes knob and tube wiring had to be replaced and upgraded. I have hired an independent electrical contractor. He seems knowledgeable. I simply cannot comprehend the terminology or recognize the changes or the installation repairs being. How should I proceed with the supervision of the electrical upgrades I’m responsible for but cannot authorize the work as completed once it’s completed?

Answer:
Hello Vernon,
The best advice we can offer is to check with the local building inspection department for required permits and inspections. Explain the situation to them and see what the requirements are. The inspectors for a jurisdiction have the responsibilities for application of Code rules and approvals. In some areas where no building inspection department exists, there are third party inspection agencies that can be hired for the purposes described in your question.
