Question:
Hello Code Friends,
Section 210.4(B) - states multi branch circuits shall have handle ties on single pole breakers or a three pole breaker..... Can this be accomplished with "QUALIFIED and TRAINED PERSONNEL ALONG WITH WARNING LABELS" on the panelboards at the source(s)? I have 20 year old panelboards where handle ties are not available and in lieu of replacing all the breakers, looking at solutions. In the event we could install the Handle Ties, they are not hanel trips and could pose more of a safety issue as an electrician may believe all three legs are dead and there is no neutral current...... Thoughts?

Answer:
Hi Eric,
The NEC does not offer an exception to relax the multiwire branch circuit disconnecting means requirements as state in your question. Identified handle ties can be used, and multi pole circuit breakers can be used to accomplish compliance with Section 210.4(B). See also 240.15(B)(1)
