Question:
Good Day Code Question.
We are providing power to a custom table with hollow steel legs. Can the legs be used as a raceway? Or would there still need to be some sort of conduit?

Answer:
Hello Curt.
Thanks for the question. The legs of a steel table are not recognized as a raceway in the NEC. The wiring in a table leg should be installed in an NEC-recognized raceway of cable assembly to achieve minimum NEC compliance. We can’t see the installation from here, so it would probably be best to inquire with the local inspector. Electrical approvals rest with the authority having jurisdiction as indicated in Section 110.2 and 90.4. There may be an option to have the wired metal table field evaluated by a qualified electrical testing laboratory and labeled, but that seems a bit extreme.
