Question:
Hello CQD,
Here is my question. I have installed a ceiling fan in the center of my bedroom. The ceiling fan has a remote that operates on a battery. The remote controls the fan motor and the light kit installed. If I mount the remote on the wall next to the door for the bedroom, does it meet the requirements in 210.70(A)? My electrician friend says the Code requires a switch controlled lighting outlet be installed. We are using the 2014 NEC.
Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the question. Section 210.70(A) requires at least one wall switch–controlled lighting outlet shall be installed in every habitable room and bathroom. A bedroom is a habitable room, by definition. The requirement anticipates a wall switch installed that is connected to the electrical wiring of the building. A battery-powered remote does not meet that requirement and it is not covered by the NEC.
