Question:
Hello and thanks for your service. We are trying to gather materials for an inground swimming pool and we've been told that 8 AWG solid copper wire is required for the bonding grid as provided in 680.26. Is there a reason for the solid requirement as compared to a stranded copper conductor? Appreciate any insights provided. We have an electrician and the job will be permitted and inspected.
Thanks.

Answer:
Hi Ronald,
The reason for the solid 8 AWG copper conductor is corrosive influences from pool chemicals and treated water. Fine strands of stranded conductors are more vulnerable to severe damage from corrosion than the required solid conductor. Physical damage (breakage) is also a concern where this bonding conductor is exposed. Check Section 680.26 for the locations where the 8 AWG solid copper conductor is required for bonding. Hope this is useful.
