Question:
Good Morning Code Fans!
Appreciate what you do. Is a standard pan head sheet metal screw approved for grounding and bonding connections? There seems to be confusion in the field. Your opinion is valuable.

Answer:
Hello Bernie and thanks for the kind words. Grounding and bonding connection means must meet the requirements in Section 250.8. Based on the information provided, the sheet metal screws are not suitable and recognized by the NEC for grounding or bonding connections. Section 250.8 lists out the methods that are acceptable. This section indicates that equipment grounding conductors, grounding electrode conductors, and bonding jumpers shall be connected by listed pressure connectors, terminal bars, pressure connectors listed as grounding and bonding equipment, exothermic welding process, machine screw-type fasteners that engage not less than two threads or are secured with a nut, thread-forming machine screws that engage not less than two threads in the enclosure, connections that are part of a listed assembly, or other listed means. Hope this provides the clarification you seek.
