Question:
Hello,
I'm an Ohio resident and was wondering if it is a code requirement to always have an electrical box installed for a receptacle/outlet. I ask because an electrician replaced old wiring for an outlet that didn't originally have an electrical box. The electrician added the new wiring but didn't add an electrical box and just used the original hole in the wall.

Answer:
Hello Tim,
Boxes are generally required at slice and outlet points on the wiring system. Based on the information provided in the question, a box would be required. Refer to NEC Section 300.15 for more specific information that applies to your installation.
