Question:
In a commercial kitchen, with a sink, I know that all duplex outlets must be GFCI protected. If you install a Simplex outlet, for say a Microwave, does it have to be GFCI protected?
Charles Taylor
A
Answer:
Hey Charles thanks for your question. Yes. All single-phase receptacles, in other than dwelling unit kitchens, 50 amperes and less that are supplied from a branch circuit rated 150 volts to ground or less must have GFCI protection as stated in 210.8(B) and 210.8(B)(2). The definition of Receptacle in Article 100 states that a single receptacle is a single contact device. A duplex receptacle is actually two receptacles and both need GFCI protection in commercial kitchens.
