Question:
Hello CQD,
Is there any sort of emergency shut off switch required for a gas furnace, or is a switch mounted to the unit sufficient? I guess my question is I understand oil fired furnaces require a red emergency shut off switch (e.g. at the top of the basement stairs), and am wondering if a gas furnace requires the same. I'm in CT if that makes a difference.

A
Answer:
Hi Jeffrey,
The disconnecting means required for this furnace is addressed in Section 422.31(B) or (B) as applicable. The disconnect can be located on the furnace or remote. If remote is must be lockable in the open position and meet the requirements in Section 110.25. The switch located at the top of the basement stairs sounds like a local practice. Hope this is helpful.
