Question:
Good Morning,
Does a meter mounted transfer switch for a generator require an electrical inspection? Some are saying that it is installed ahead of the service point and therefore is not covered by the NEC. We would appreciate your opinion.

A
Answer:
Hi Paul,
Great question. Installations of meter-mounted transfer switches for optional standby power are typically connected to a generator. This equipment is required to be listed and installed in accordance with any instructions included in the listing. See Sections 702.5(B) and 110.3(B). The NEC requirements apply to this equipment generally unless there is a local electrical Code rule that exempts them.
