Question:

Thanks for all the great Code information. Our question is related to the color-coding of the conduit on a job where all the wiring is installed and exposed. Does the NEC require separate color codes for the conduit and tubing? The engineering group is requiring this in their plans and specs. Just looking for your perspectives.

Answer:

Hi Andy, thank you for the kind words. Great question and this situation is becoming more common. The answer is generally no, the NEC does not require separate color coding of raceways to distinguish one system from another. There are identification requirements for systems such as emergency system enclosures as provided in 700.10(A) for example. While color-coding is one method of identificant that can be used, it is not the only one. We are aware that some conduit and tubing manufacturers are producing conduit and tubing in a variety of colors for situations like yours where the plans and specification require it. Some adopted local electrical code regulations and administration rules require that the plans and specifications be followed.
