Question:
Hello Friends,
We are removing the electrical wiring in an older home. It was originally wired using the knob and tube wiring method. The splices appear to be soldered when removing all the rubber tape. Is this an acceptable method for splicing wires in a junction box? We are not intended to do this with the new wiring, but we were curious.

A
Answer:
Hi Alex,
Thanks for the question. It was common years ago to use solder on splices in a wiring system. The NEC no longer permits solder to be used as the means of joining two conductors together, but tinning two wires that are otherwise joined is still recognized in the Code. Use of solder on splices is rare today due to the multitude of listed splicing connectors that make it unnecessary. You might want to refer to Section 110.14(B) of the NEC.
