Question:
Subject: Residential walk-in closet
How is a residential walk-in closet treated for receptacles? Do we follow 210.52(A)(1). The so called 6-12 rule.
M. P. Long, P.E.
A
Answer:
Hey M.P. Long, thanks for contributing. There is no NEC requirement for receptacle outlets to be installed in a walk-in closet or a clothes closet.
In the 2008 NEC development process, a new definition of the term "clothes closet" was added to Article 100. This term is defined as follows:
Clothes Closet. A non-habitable room or space intended primarily for storage of garments and apparel.
This definition helps differentiate a habitable room from one intended for storage or garments. Use of cords and utilization equipment is less likely in a closet. The NEC does not require receptacle outlets in closets. This is the owner's or designer's choice.
