Question:
Good morning CQD, I enjoy reading these questions and answers every morning. Does the NEC® require an equipment ground for a feeder or branch circuit added in a retrofit installation to be routed independently or does it have to stay with the branch circuit and/or feeder conductors? Regards, Gary Donaldson
A
Answer:
Hello Gary, glad to hear you enjoy the CQD. In general, the equipment grounding conductor is required to be installed in the same raceway, conduit body, auxiliary gutter, cable tray, cablebus, trench, cable, or cord by Section 300.3(B). There are some installation circumstances where this general rule is relaxed a bit found in Sections 300.3(B)(1)-(4), specifically 300.3(B)(2) for grounding and bonding conductors for certain existing installations.
