Question:
Hello code question of the day, Article 334 contains Code Sections specifying where Type NM Cable is permitted and not permitted to be installed. One of these not permitted areas is in wet or damp areas. In common residential construction with a real brick exterior a space is created between the house wrap and the brick. If this space was used as a chase to feed an exterior lighting outlet, would it be considered to be in a dry, wet or damp location? Regards, James Watson

Answer:
Hello James, thanks for your question. Real brick/masonry facades are designed with drain and weep holes to expel any moisture. This would imply that the expectation is that water to get in that area. Additionally, the Article 100 definition of
“Wet Location” includes masonry in direct contact with the earth.
